The Right Tile Adhesive for Every Surface, A Definitive Guide for Indian Sites

by Technotrade Associates on May 21, 2026

Tile adhesives are the most misunderstood product category in construction chemicals. They’re treated as commodities, “adhesive is adhesive”, when in reality the difference between the correct adhesive and the wrong one can mean the difference between a floor that lasts thirty years and one that starts lifting in the second monsoon.

The ISO 13007 Classification System

C = Cementitious adhesive (powder, mixed with water). D = Dispersion adhesive (ready to use). R = Reaction resin adhesive (two-component epoxy or polyurethane).

Performance classifications: C1, Normal setting. C2, Improved (higher bond strength). T, Slip resistant (mandatory for walls). E, Extended open time (for large format tiles). S1, Deformable. S2, Highly deformable.

So C2TE S1 = improved cementitious, slip-resistant, extended open time, deformable. High-spec wall tile adhesive for large format tiles on substrates with moderate movement.

Large Format Tiles (60x60cm and above)

Minimum specification: C2TE S1, extended open time is critical because a large tile takes longer to position and tap level. Full bed application (both floor and tile back) is mandatory. Spot fixing, applying adhesive in five spots, is a failure mechanism.

External Wall Cladding

Minimum specification: C2TE S1 for tiles up to 30x30cm on facades up to 4 storeys. For larger tiles on higher facades: C2TE S2 or proprietary facade cladding systems. Mechanical fixing required for heavy stone tiles. Movement joints at every floor level and maximum 3m horizontal intervals.

Swimming Pool Tiling

Minimum specification: R2 (two-component epoxy adhesive) or manufacturer’s specified pool tile adhesive. For grout joints: epoxy grout only. Cementitious grout in a pool joint will absorb water, support algae growth, and disintegrate within one season.

Natural Stone

Light-coloured marble is highly susceptible to staining by iron compounds in grey cementitious adhesives. Use white cementitious adhesive for all light natural stone. Natural stone tiles should always be fully bedded, no voids under the tile, to prevent cracking under point loads.

Adhesive Coverage, The Calculation Everyone Gets Wrong

Correct coverage: minimum 80% of tile back area in dry internal conditions, minimum 95% for external applications, 100% for pools and heavy stone. Coverage rate on the product bag is theoretical on a smooth substrate. Real-site consumption on textured substrates is typically 15–25% higher.
