Sunken Slab and Bathroom Waterproofing
Getting It Right Before Tiles Go In
Bathrooms and sunken slabs are one of the most common leakage areas in any building.
Reason simple hai:
Once water enters inside, it has no easy exit.
It slowly spreads and finally shows up as leakage in the ceiling below or in adjacent room. And by the time you see the leak, the problem is already much bigger inside.
Why Bathroom Waterproofing Fails So Often
Terrace leaks are easier to understand. Water goes down.
But in a bathroom:
- Water moves sideways and downward
- It travels through joints, pipe areas, and walls
- The filling material inside acts like a water storage zone
Once water enters this zone, it stays trapped and keeps creating pressure.
That’s why surface repair rarely works. , Problem andar hoti hai, upar nahi.
Most Common Mistake
Waterproofing is treated like a last-minute job.
Usually done like this:
- Quick coating
- No preparation
- Tiles immediately
This approach almost guarantees future leakage.
Correct Sequence (Very Important)
Waterproofing ka game sequence ka hai.
Follow this step by step:
1. RCC Slab
- Cast slab
- Cure for minimum 28 days
2. Surface Preparation
- Clean surface properly
- Remove weak particles
- Fill honeycombs and defects
Surface solid hona chahiye, warna coating fail hogi
3. First Waterproofing Layer (Base Layer)
Apply waterproofing on:
- Bottom slab
- All side walls
- Take coating 150 to 200 mm above floor level
Use cementitious polymer waterproofing
This layer will remain hidden forever, so do it properly
4. Curing + Flood Test
Before doing anything else:
- Fill area with 50 mm water
- Keep for 24 to 48 hours
No leakage = proceed
Leakage = fix now
This step is almost always skipped, and that’s where problems start.
5. Plumbing and Filling
Only after successful test:
- Install pipes
- Fill the sunken area with material
Remember:
Waterproofing always comes before filling, not after
6. Top Screed and Second Waterproofing Layer
After filling:
- Lay top screed
Then apply second waterproofing layer on top
Use flexible or elastomeric coating
This layer handles daily water usage like shower and cleaning
Pipe Areas or Core Cuts: Biggest Risk Zone
Most leaks happen from pipe joints.
Why?
- Pipe and concrete expand differently
- Small gaps develop over time

Correct Method:
- Do not fill pipe gaps with simple cement mortar
- Use Combination of Non-Shrink Grout or easy flow grout between the pipe and slab joint.
- Fill the core cut in two stages
- First half apply polymerised bond coat and pour flowable grout like Sika Grout or Conbextra GP2 or EasyGrout
- Next Day apply epoxy bond coat using BS Epoxy 611 or Nitbond EP by brush and fill in the rest of the half with cementitious grout
- Even better specs for tall building is using Water Swellable PU between two half to create a secondary seal
- Extend waterproofing coating around pipes
- Use mesh reinforcement at pipe base
If available, use collars for best sealing
Wall Waterproofing
Bathroom walls also need protection.
For normal walls:
- Waterproof up to 300 mm height minimum
- Full height in shower area
For sunken walls:
- Same treatment as slab
- Continuous coating from bottom to above floor level
Important Joint
Floor and wall joint is the weakest point.
👉 Always reinforce this joint using mesh before coating
Tile Adhesive and Grout Matter
One hidden problem most people ignore:
Even if waterproofing is correct, wrong tile materials can cause failure.
What to use:
- Polymer modified tile adhesive
- Waterproof grout
What to avoid:
- Basic cement grout in wet areas
👉 Water enters through grout lines and creates long-term damage
If Waterproofing Fails
Repair is never simple.
Two options:
1. Injection from below
Works only in limited cases
2. Full removal
- Remove tiles
- Remove screed
- Remove filling
- Redo everything
👉 Cost can be 8 to 15 times higher than doing it right initially
Final Understanding
Bathroom waterproofing is not complicated.
But it is very unforgiving if done wrong.
It requires:
- Correct sequence
- Proper detailing
- Testing before closing
Simple Rule
- First waterproof slab
- Then fill
- Then waterproof again
- Then tile
Miss this order, and leakage is almost certain.
One Line Summary
Bathroom waterproofing ka rule simple hai:
“Jo kaam tile ke neeche chup jaata hai, wahi sabse important hota hai.”
